Green Bay Packers’ Pick Evan Williams Reveals First Thoughts

The Green Bay Packers selected University of Oregon safety Evan Williams in the fourth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon, marking the second safety they have chosen in the draft.

On Friday night, the Packers took University of Georgia safety Javon Bullard in Round 2.

Upon being selected, Williams said that Green Bay liked his tenacity and motor and that he has spent a lot of time with Packers coaches, via Chris Roth of WBAY. He added that they were very high on him.

Green Bay lost their top three safeties in Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens and Rudy Ford to free agency, so it’s not surprising that it is focusing heavily on the position this offseason.

The Packers were able to sign Xavier McKinney, the top safety on the market, but prior to picking Bullard on Friday, Anthony Johnson was slotted in as the other starting safety opposite of McKinney.

That certainly won’t be the case anymore.

Williams is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he racked up 82 tackles, five tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a couple of fumble recoveries.

The 22-year-old began his collegiate career at Fresno State in 2019 but didn’t really begin to break out until his third season with the Bulldogs. That year, he registered 90 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, a forced fumble, a pair of fumble recoveries and four passes defended.

In his final year with Fresno State in 2022, Williams recorded 69 tackles, six tackles for loss, a sack and four passes defended.

He then transferred to Oregon.

We’ll see what Evan Williams can bring to the table in Green Bay next season.
